Remove the 4 bolts holding the axle/backing plate to the rear end housing. Invert your brake drum on the wheel studs and just barely start the lug nuts, about 2-3 threads or so. Use the drum as a slide hammer to pull the axle/hub/backing plate, etc. free of the housing....
I did this to both my 72 Javelin and a 72 Matador parts car in order to swap axle shafts between the two--this worked like a charm.
