A: We have a decent engine builder at my NAPA store with some AMC
experience. If I take them the core, they build it for @$1500 (depending on
cam choice, etc) and stand behind it. 90% of the shops with a reman 401 need
your core to do so. (or the core charge is a heavy @$500 or so)
To run a 401 where the 360 was, you need the correct harmonic balancer
and flexplate or have the engine balanced to zero and run the 6 cyl
flexplate (personally prefferable because less vibration means longer life
and easier to get parts for down the road)

Just searched for web prices on rebuilt engines for my Ambassador and GW.
Found this site and there was a lot of engine info on there. Old news for
most.
See below. (Propane 360?)
Are these prices ok? Or am I better off having a local shop rebuild mine?
Money is tight so top of the line is out for now.
Also there is a rebuilt 401 available on another site.
Can I put that in my 89 GW? Or even the 70 Ambassador SST?
The ambassador is a long shot. My car is 2 barrel but there was a 4 barrel
option available. I am sure there is a lot to do to get that to work.
