Aluminum Bumpers - Revisited

When I previously posted a question about stripping the factory coating from Spirit bumpers, I was directed to a metal plating web site. The recommendation there was to use chemical drain opener, while a lister recommended oven cleaner. Well, the Drano had zero effect, while the oven cleaner took it right off, and not too harshly. It took 4 applications to remove 100% of the anodized or irridated coating, and they are polishing up pretty good. I will be using the POR product Glisten to recoat, as recommended by a lister.
If you plan to do this, allow the oven cleaner to work for 10 minutes or so the first time, reducing the time exposed as more of the coating comes off. I also used OOOO steel wool to speed up the process. It did leave some scratches, but the polish seems to be taking care of that. I used scotchbrite at first, but it scratched too much. I will let you all know how the "Glisten" turns out.
