You're on the right track.

For 1971, all V8s got their displacement emblems.
For 1972-73, only 401 got emblems..the rest were 
unmarked.
At some point in 1974, even the 401 emblems stopped 
being applied to the big sedans and the Javelins...
tho Matador coupes seemed to keep them.
>From 1975, on....all such emblems were gone.

Naturally, all these years later, lots of cars have 
them that didn't when new...and the current owners 
swear they are original. Heck, I've sen SEVERAL 
Javelin-AMX-SSTs, wearing all three sets of emblems!!
