Rear ends?



Hello all,

i've been e member of the list for a little over a year now, but dont post a lot. In my gremlin i have the 232 with an offy intake and holly 400 4 barrel, and the stock 3spd auto (998?), and the non 'posi' rear end (AMC 15?). i got the car about a year and a half ago, rebuilt the front suspention/steering parts, installed a brake booster, and electric fan ditching the stock mech fan. unfortunately i still cant keep up with the local hondas. perhaps the fact they drive a 200lbs peice of plastic and have the same or more number of pony's out of their 4 bangers has soemthing to do with it?

in any case the gremmy is to be my project car. I plan to get a 93 or later 4.0 (for the HO head) and rebuild it as a 4.7. I'm thinking about setting up an MSD ignition/distributor/coil but i haven't heard anything much about anyone using it? has anyone had experience with these parts? and whatever other mods i can find to help a little here and there. This is my daily driver so i have to do a bit at a time. - Rebuilding a 4.0 wont take her off the road

I haven't decided about a tranny yet, but have been concidering the T5. While changing to standard doesn't nessicarily improve times, and can of course hinder you in bracket racing, its more fun. I dont think i would have any aversion to a nice floor shift automatic. Does anyone have suggestions?
From what i have gathered the AW4 from a 2wd jeep would do but i would realy
like to have OD and i dont recall seeing that on any of them? and if so is there a shift kit available?

as for the rear end? that will have to go too i think. its old and abused from the guys who beat the car to the door of the junkyard before i got her, and one wheel drive just wont cut it once i have the new stroked engine in there. idealy the new rear would be newer and lighter but i'll take what i can get. especialy if it has disk brakes already on it. as that will save me a lot of headaches. Where i am <Vancouver island> there aren't a lot of AMC's so a AMC 20 would be just about out of the question even if the disc's didn't come into it. has anyone swapped a newer rear onto a gremmy/concorde/eagle and if so what rears? even one a little narrower than the stock would be ok as i could just change the offset on the rims when i get them. i plan to have big meats back there anyway.

is there anything in the way of a body kit/ground FX out there? I want to put one on and lower the car a few inches. i know i have seen pics of the gremlin GT wich had fender flares and i believe a front air dam? a similar kit was i believe available on the SX/4 some years i know i saw a set of that on a car in the local wreckers at one point. i like the air dam, but cant stand the fender flares. has anyone experimented with these things? how about removing the bumpers and replacing them with glass? i'd like to at least pull off the front one and replace it with a grille then perhaps drop a tranny cooler behind it.

sorry about the long post and i hope the older AMCers wont be too offended by my plans to "rice out" my gremmy. i know i know those guys are anoying, but i cant wait to see jaws drop when i wheel her onto the feild and compeat in a sound comp and have them look at my car and be like "what the f^%$ is that? did you feed your honda DRUGS???"
