Carb Problem



Mark,

What intake are you currently running on this engine?  Do you have the 
bypass hose on the water neck blocked off or is it installed?  How about 
the heat cross over tube, is it installed or blocked off?  Do you have a 
choke and is it set properly?  There is a number of things that could 
cause it to stumble during initial acceleration.  You could have a leak in 
the carb somewhere, your intake charge can be too cold causing the fuel to 
not atomize properly, timing can be off, you might be dumping too much 
fuel when you hit the throttle hard, choke not working properly etc.  Ten 
minutes for the car to warm up to a point where it is running properly 
sounds excessive.  If the car is running at an idle sitting still, it will 
take longer for it to get up to operating temp especially if it is cold 
out side but it should be warm enough to run without the choke within a 
couple minutes.  It does not need to get up to 180 before it will run 
without problems.  It just sounds like your tuning is too far off, you 
have a leak in the carb or choke not working properly.  Does this go away 
after the engine is nice and hot?

Last night, Larry Daum and I took my SC 360 clone for
a spin.  When he stomped on it, the car didn't take
off like you would expect.  It balked and hesitated
before it picked up speed.  It also takes about 10
minutes to warm up in the morning.  Any less and it
will stall when you accelerate or if it doesn't stall,
it will "pop" through the carb several times.  Larry
thinks it may be running too rich or not jetted right.
 The carb is a Carter AFB performance 4-bbl.  I'm
thinking of switching to an Edlebrock 600 cfm
Performer 4-bbl. and possibly an Edlebrock intake. 
I'm seeking suggestions for my carb problem.  I also
want to know if replacing the Carter with an Edlebrock
is a good idea.  Also, I'm thinking of going with an
MSD ignition.  Any comments or suggestions would be
appreciated.
