  Actually did a search, and it's only 249 miles from
my house, 75 miles north of Richmonda, VA. Here's the
directions from I-95 south of Richmond, to Pikeville,
NC....

 6: Merge onto I-95 S. 107.9 miles  
 
 7: Merge onto US-264 E via EXIT 119. 6.2 miles  
 
 8: Merge onto US-301 N via EXIT 43A. 0.6 miles  
 
 9: Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto US-117. 13.5 miles  
 
 10: End at Pikeville, NC US  

  So, from RIchmond, VA, it's only a little over 2
hours to Pikeville...not a very long way out of your
way. Looks like you can take 301 down if you want to.
Nice drive. :) 
  Anyway, let us know if you decide to take this AMC
detour thru history. It's an awesome sight. The
dealership will be on your right , across from a strip
mall, on Rt. 117, just below Pikeville a 1/2 mile or
so. Good sight-seeing !

  P.S. If you also want to see 4-5 Gremlins and a
Pacer wagon along the way, you could stop in and see
ME, if it's on a weekend. I have a Gremlin GT, a
sunroof Gremlin, among them. None show quality, all
outside awaiting my attention. Anyway, just an offer.
