A: AX-15 is a nice tight, strong trans (available in 2wd '89 up XJs and 
Grand Cherokees with 4.0 ), but you would want to match the axle ratio and 
tire size to the Jeep it came from for best results. The 2WD BA 10/5 I am 
running right now works well, but it won't take the abuse forever (it has a 
leak in the front someplace and I am changing to auto soon, so I'm not too 
worried about it) It worked more like car gearing (well, the Peugeot used 
them with the same ratio. I tried to find different internal gearing on 
Peugeot lists and was unsuccessful) when I was running 33" tires, and 3.08 
ratio. Now I rev out in first with 3.73 gears and have to upshift in town to 
5th sometimes, but taking off on the hills is easier.

Well that's true enough. I lived in Assachusetts til I was
20something. Salt! And my hornet has none.

But for every AMC out here there's 10, easy, out there. Sheetmetal
lasts OK, but hard parts are murder to find. My trans is coming
from Virginia.  Shipping -- ouch! And I can't see it til it gets
here.

I *like* sixes. Like a fool I want a manual trans. If this trans
is a bust I'll stick a 904 in it w/a shift kit. The motor is a
built 258 I bought from a friend -- it appears to be nice, we'll

see.
