{FORGED?} 5 MPH Bumper Question

I need to know if anyone has disassembled the rear bumper brackets/cyl. or what ever they are called on the 74 or later Hornet's. I plan on tucking the bumpers on the orange Hornet closer to the body.The front ones are pistons and I plan on elongating the mounting bracket holes to move the bumper closer to the body. The rears don't appear to be pistons but just tubes. Is there a spring or some kind of rebound mechanism inside the tube? I figured I could shorten the tube a few inches to tuck in the rear bumper.
