The crankshaft goes around TWICE for every revolution of the
distributor. The timing mark lines up TWICE with the distributor one one
of two places. 50% chance you got it wrong!
You set the distributor to poitn to #1 cylinder when #1 is at the top of
the COMPRESSION STROKE.
Here's my simple way of figuring out when #1 is at the top of the
COMPRESSION STROKE:
1. pull the wire off the coil or distrib cap so you can crank it without
starting!
2. Pull #1 spark plug.
3. Stick your finger in the hole (really).
4. Using a remote starter, or a clip lead from battery + to starter
solenoid, turn the motor over a wee bit at a time. CLICK... CLICK...
5. At some point the motor will fart your finger out of the hole. That's
the compression stroke!
6. Now align the timing mark with TDC. (You can usually turn the motor a
little with your hands on a non-clutch fan if you use your other hand to
squeeze the fan belt and keep it from slipping.)
Then install the distributor pointing to #1.
