aha! This happened to me once, in fact! It's likely the dust
shield on the bottom/back of the trans/bellhousing is missing
a screw, has dropped down a bit and is brrrrrrrt'ing against
the ring gear. It sounds terrible, and is fixed trivially by
lifting the cover back into place and replacing the screw.

THe cover rides very close to the ring gear.

Do NOT run without that cover, it ruins air flow and cooling,
but if you take it off the noise should shut up.
