The light is indeed for the park brake. The switch is probably stuck. It should blink (due to a thermal switch built into the socket as Matt guessed) whrn the park brake is pulled. You should be able to see it under the dash and bend the mount to adjust the switch. The thermal part might be bad and causing the problem though. The thermal switch could be in the switch assembly and not the socket, actually, I forget which now! This was an option, not sure if it could be ordered alone or just came with the light group (which contained an under dash light on each side of the dash and door switches for the front doors). 

It should be easy to trace the cable from under the dash too. I didn't think it was for the tranny, as yours shouldn't have that model trans, but posted just in case.
