Re: water pump change/p-s pump/valve cover

A: There is a plate in the front with a bolt that holds the whole thing from
swinging. I can send you a pic of the one on the '80 Cherokee 258 I'm
parting.

Wondering if someone might have a tip or two. Its been a while since I had
to change a water pump, which I did on my pacer about 10 years ago.( Its
still doing ok) Now I have to do it on my 81 concord, the fan housng is
very wobbly. It is a 258, non serpentine, with a/c and p/s. Well. I easily
got the thermostat housing off, and the fan, etc. But I can not budge the
P/S pump to loosen the belt. I followed my amc TSM and loosened the 3 bolts
behind the pump, on the adjusting bracket, including the one hidden by the
small flange. I put the half inch drive into the adjusting plate and try to
loosen it, and I even used a small Hammer to hit the socket wrench handle.
Not a budge. What am I doing wrong? or am i just not smacking it enough, I
just do not want to bust up the adjusting bracket cause it looks like its
made of pot metal or aluminum. Also, I had degreased the engine and hosed it
all down, looks good, but it seems that now the temp guage doeesn't work,
and the clock wil!
l not work unless I pull out the headlamp switch. I think both were working
before. The fuel guage workd. When I pull the wire off the temp guage and
ground it, the gauge goes to full hot.I am not getting any heat from the
heater. Is the guage and the clock issue related. I have also found a brown
wire with a L shaped connector plug hanging near the cowl and the wiper. Not
sure what it goes to, kind of looks like the plug for the temp sender unit
when it was placed near the thermostat housing. I can not seem to find the
answer in the book..... Since I- eventually- will have the pump and the
thermostat houseing off, I am thinking of taking off the plastic valve cover
and re rtv'ing it, as it's leaking. Would this would be a good time to do
it, since the pum po and thermostat is already off, to make the job easier?
SomeOne previously put a cork gasket under it. it is the original design,
with only the few bolts on the top and side. The cover looks in good shape.
If I recall, !
it should only only have the RTC. or has anyone had good results with
using a gasket and the RTV.
thanks for any suggestions.
regards, Ken.
