Dist-cam gear alignment

The wear pattern should be closer to the center of the distributor gear.
Are you using the distributor gasket between the dist. hold down and the
timing cover? Do you have any end play on the end of the distributor
shaft? Is it a stock distributor or an after market piece? How about the
timing cover? Are you getting enough oil and have you checked for cam
walk. As you can see, there are a ton of variables here.

I have lost 2 dist gears since I rebuilt my 390,It seems like the dist
gear is wearing on the top like it is to deep in the hole is it possible

to shim the dist so it doesn't go too deep or should I buy a new cover
