Well, I'm bummed. The buyer decided that, given the problems I'd found,
he didn't feel good about driving 22 hrs round trip to buy my engine.
I'm certain the #7 cylinder would clean up nicely with a +.020" overbore,
but I suppose I can understand his reluctance considering how far away he
lives. I wouldn't have driven that far myself even for a perfect engine.
So, now that I've got this 401 completely disconnected and half dismantled
from my '78 Wag, who wants to buy it? I really don't want to have to
reassemble it all again to store it for the winter. I'd like $500 for it.
I'd really rather that you come pick it up in Lincoln, NE (68506), but
I suppose I'd ship it if you want to pay for shipping and a bit more
for my trouble.
I've torn apart most of this engine during the last week trying
(successfully)
to solve the non-rotating crank problem, and I can attest that it all
appears to be in excellent shape, except for the #7 cylinder walls that
had some surface rust on them, but cleaned up pretty well. With a wrench
on the crank pulley, the engine turns over by hand just fine. I bought
this Wag in non-running form from a junk yard, so I've never heard the
engine run. The plugs all looked great when I pulled them, so the engine
probably ran pretty well when it was parked. The t-case is worn, which
is probably why the Jeep was junked.
That price will get you a good long block and factory 4bbl manifold.
No exhaust manifolds, carb, distributor, or accessories. The 401-TH400
flex plate is available, but not included at that price. So is the
entire TH400, for that matter.

I've got a freshly-rebuilt 401 in my '77 Wag, and I can tell you it's
sure a lot of fun to drive! It has plenty of power for towing my
Wrangler along hilly highways, and it'd also be great for snapping
axle shafts in a light-weight trail rig.
