Re: Pull a part parts...

Not really. The only thing you could do is run a compression test. Pull all plugs, squirt a little oil in (no telling how long it's sat up), turn it over with a wrench 5-6 times, then connect the compression gauge and do the same (turn 5-6 times). Would take a lot of doing though! I usually just see if it will turn over. If it won't, put some tranny fluid in each cylinder (a bottle spread among 8 is usually enough), let it sit a day or two, then go back and try again. If it doesn't break loose it should probably be passed over as a rebuilder. If it's a 390 or 401 I'd likely pull it anyway unless it's obvious that a rod was thrown. Most engines sold as runners will be in a different area and can be started, or the yard will guarantee them to run or swap out. If you're in the main pull yard, you're just getting a rebuildable core. Most yards will swap it for another if you find it can't be rebuilt once you start tearing it down, but ask first.
