Keep in mind that the original post said it did not even have an inspection
plate.   Which suggests that it has a non-AMC  diff in it!!

Ron, that 10 bolt is an AMC 15, not a 20 as what came
with the car originally. It is easy to pop in a 15
from a Jav cause the PO might have done that. The
covers do not interchange, though. Two thoughts;
Recount the bolts, maybe taking out one bolt to mark
your starting point. Or, maybe it is Chryco cover, I
believe the 8 3/4 inch fits but I do not know if the
cover has a plug or not. Maybe an aftermarket cover.
All 15s have plugs, that is the easiest way to tell
