Went to see that 76 Gremlin on Wednesday - report - kinda wordy - sorry

Hello again,

I posted a few days ago about going to check out a 1976 Gremlin in my area.

Well, most of everything discussed over the phone was true.

Condition of the car:

105,000 miles
cranked right up with no problem (idled well, very little smoke on start only only)
regular oil leaks under the hood
body is straight as an arrow with the few exceptions
dime size rust at bottom rear of driver's door (not "pin hole")
rust bubble starting on pass. door at same spot
two (2) nickel sized dings in driver's door
hinge bushings shot
driver's wind crank broken (but both exterior handles were in great shape!)
the plastic/fiberglass "trim" around the front (wraps from fender to fender around grill, lights, etc)
was not damaged, but the mounting holes had stress cracks
all the side markers, tail lights, head lights were there
four (4) original hub caps
faded (oxidized) paint that would probably look great with a few hours on the buffer
Gremlin men still stuck on rear sides

now for the interior
headliner - shot
carpet - shot
dash - so so (radio pulled out but I don't think it was cut)
gas and temp. gauge go up and down in synchronization ( common short maybe?)
quarter size rust hole dead center of driver's floor board (may have had piece previously welded in - not sure)
hole in driver's seat - looked like a toilet seat! I don't know how he kept from sitting on the pan!

Rear hatch wouldn't open (alignment I think)

Some pics available - apparently I forgot how to operate my digital camera and only a few of my pics came out. Email me for pics. ( wblewis@xxxxxxxxxxxxx )

Now the bad news. He started flip - floppin' on selling it. Reliving nostalgia, I think. Which is cool, if he wants to drive it, GREAT! another AMC in this town. But he would NOT name a price. I told him I paid $425 for my Spirit (which is in a little better shape in my opinion!) and he said "I would not let it go for that much."

When I spoke to him on the phone, I mentioned the info from the List and said maybe anywhere from $200 to $1200 and he said "I wouldn't let it go for $1200." I took that to mean it probably wasn't worth it, but now I think he wants more than that for it.

I told him if he decided on a price to call me and if I could afford it I would buy it, otherwise I would put it on the List. The least I could do is ask for parts for him.

So, we'll see what happens. I know if he advertises it, he will be very dissapointed with the offers. I'm thinking $450 MAX.

But we'll see...........

Ask for pics if ya want 'em!
